Today an anti fracking colleague pointed us to the Environmental Permitting issued by the Environment Agency for radioactive wastes the fracking company Cuadrilla wants to bring up out of boreholes and dump into the environment.  This is beyond scandalous.  But it got me thinking about the 100 boreholes that have already started being bored into the land around Sellafield.  If there are any Environmental Permits then the Environment Agency aren’t making them easy to find.  And where will the radioactive plutonium and caesium brought up out of the contaminated ground next to Sellafield go?  How will the use of explosives for borehole drilling affect the nearby crumbling Sellafield waste  ponds?

Fracking brings up Naturally Occuring Radioactive Materials – which is nasty carcinogenic stuff.

But the stuff about to be brought out of the contaminated ground next to Sellafield is far worse and yet …..WHY IS NO ONE SHOUTING?

It is goose bump  making to see the Friends of the Lake District and others putting so much effort into the pylon consultation.  The pylon consultation is just a means to push along this diabolic plan for 3 dangerous reactors next to the most dangerous pile of radioactive wastes in the world.

The pylons WILL NOT GO AHEAD if Moorside is stopped, we know this because the National Grid told us so.  So why aren’t Friends of the Lake District, Cumbria Wildlife Trust and other groups working to Stop Moorside instead of faffing about with pylons?  They say they are waiting for the developers consultation on Moorside (actually Greenmoorside and Peterburgh farm )

– they might as well say they are waiting for the Titanic to set sail.

Friends of the Lake District’s “Fragile Environment” Talk by Pro Nuclear, Pro Fracking Chris Smith

t2Life_walk_74014815_50558c

Lord Chris Smith is pro nuclear and pro fracking. He is giving a lecture tonight to Friends of the Lake District on the threats to our fragile natural environment….his pro nuclear stance  while Head of the Environment Agency has been instrumental in facilitating the biggest threat to the Lake District….the proposal for nuclear geological dumping and new build.

Meanwhile there is a Morecambe Bay Parnership conference on in Barrow today which  presents dangerous new nuclear build as a fait accompli.  New nuclear build would double the Sellafield footprint and would include massive cooling towers as big as New York skyscrapers.  The  Morecambe Bay conference pretends that the pylons would be the worst impact.   The Morecambe Bay conference also exhorts us to “Love My Beach” while ignoring the continued radioactive crapola being spewed out from Sellafield reprocessing and washed back to the beaches with every tide.

Radiation Free Lakeland will be outside the Friends of the Lake District talk tonight in Grasmere to hand out information about Moorside – the Biggest Nuclear Development in Europe.  According to a report sanctioned by the Office for Nuclear Regulation:

“a large area of land to the north and west of the Sellafield site has been bought up by NuGen for the development of a new generation nuclear power station. The area of land is approximately 200 hectares (www.nugeneration.com). At the time of the 2013 habits survey, as a result of the land acquisition, three of the four residential properties within the direct radiation survey area were unoccupied and had been boarded up. The land in this area was previously farmed by three farmers but in 2013 it was farmed by one farmer”.

If this is true then the government and industry are colluding to predetermine any consultations.  If this is true than our government has sold a beautiful area, a huge buffer zone around Sellafield of publicly owned land without any by your leave from the public who actually own the land.  They have sold it to the companies responsible for Fukushima.  Despite this the Friends of the Lake District, the National Trust and others are “waiting for the consultation by NUGEN”

WHY?

Tomorrow will be too late, the time to oppose this diabolic plan is NOW!

You too can have a Lakeland View Like this – All you have to do is Nothing!

Moorside from Scafell Pike – You too can have a view like this – just do nothing!

Radiation Free Lakeland will be launching the report on 26th Sept at the
Beckermet Pylon Consultation from 1-2.

Please join us if you can – we will then walk for a few miles or so around the
‘Moorside’ site (actually called Greenmoorside).

The Cooling Towers for AP1000 reactors under construction in America and China are 600ft to 800ft high. This is many times higher than any existing
building in Cumbria and more than double the height of the now demolished Calder Hall cooling towers. The largest pylons for example would be 152ft.

Radioactively contaminated seawater would be drawn from the Irish Sea for cooling. Deposition from vapours and particulate matter emissions from cooling towers would fall on Lakeland. The visible vapor plumes
associated with cooling towers can rise more than 5,000 feet above the towers (ie above the Lakeland fells) and extend as far as 9 miles downwind.

The river Ehen meanders through National Trust land from Ennerdale to the final reaches at the proposed Moorside site. Fresh Water Pearl Mussels and
other endangered species are under direct threat as a result of the Moorside proposal.

NUGEN are disingenuously describing this beautiful 500 acre area of West Cumbria as
“a brownfield site.” We wonder how much more of Cumbria will be described as “brownfield” should Moorside go ahead?

Radiation Free Lakeland have sent the report to movers and shakers such as the National Trust, Friends of the Lake District and Cumbria Wildlife
Trust, all of whom are taking part in the Pylon CONsultation while Saying NOWT about the biggest nuclear development in Europe.

Campaigners will launch the Moorside Report this Friday at the Pylon Consultation in Beckermet Reading Room, Sellafield Rd from 1pm – 2pm, 26th Sept

Following this we will walk a mile or two of the scenic route around the proposed Moorside site– actually called Greenmoorside, from approx. 2pm till 4pm.

MEET AT BECKERMET READING ROOM

We will be leaving to walk the Greenmoorside/Moorside site at approx 2pm from Beckermet Reading Room, Sellafield Rd

We will take the opportunity to watch wildlife on the 500 acre site and erect a banner “Stop Moorside: The Land is Ours!”

The National Grid is holding a consultation on the pylon route from the proposed Moorside AP1000 reactors. The pylon consultation will be at the village of Beckermet on 26th Sept.   We will be there to launch the Moorside Report written by Radiation Free Lakeland which outlines the impact on Cumbria from new nuclear build. The pylons would be the very least of it.

The plant site for each nuclear reactor (there are 3 planned) is estimated to require 9.6 acres, with huge cooling towers requiring additional 15 acres Radioactively contaminated seawater drawn from the Irish Sea would precipitate over Lakeland from the cooling tower plumes. The visible vapor plumes associated with cooling towers would rise more than 5,000 feet above the towers (ie 2000 ft above the highest Lakeland fells) and extend as far as 9 miles downwind.

PRESS RELEASE

THE MOORSIDE REPORT

A new report has been produced by Radiation Free Lakeland, which outlines
the impact “the biggest nuclear development in Europe” would have on
Cumbria.

Visible vapor plumes from AP1000 cooling towers would rise more than 5,000
feet above the towers (ie 2000 feet above the highest Lakeland fells) and
extend as far as 9 miles downwind. Resulting precipitation would be from
seawater drawn from the Irish Sea, which is contaminated by Sellafield’s
reprocessing activity.

The river Ehen meanders through National Trust land from Ennerdale to the
final reaches at the proposed Moorside site. Fresh Water Pearl Mussels and
other endangered species are under direct threat as a result of the
Moorside proposal.

Spokesperson for Radiation Free Lakeland, Marianne Birkby said: NUGEN are
disingenuously describing this beautiful 500 acre area of West Cumbria as
“a brownfield site.” We wonder how much more of Cumbria will be
described as “brownfield” should Moorside go ahead?

Independent Radiation Monitoring In NW – What?

Three Wise Monkeys
Three Wise Monkeys

Radiation Free Lakeland are lobbying for independent radiation monitoring in the North West.  This used to be carried out by Radiation Monitoring in Lancashire – RADMIL – which was disbanded a few years ago due to council cuts.

Multi-national private companies taking on lucrative government contracts to “decommission” nuclear plants are essentially self regulating, such as the landfill at Lillyhall which accepted “non exempt” 3 bags of low level and one bag of intermediate level waste from Sellafield.  The Environment Agency said they were satisfied that the company running the landfill was “unaware” of Sellafield’s actions.  So no prosecution against the private company was made.  The Environment Agency are the government body policing radioactive releases to the environment. They are being crafted to become  increasingly a watchdog that does not bark, or even look.

Please write to the Chief Scientist at Lancashire County Scientific Services: scientificservices@lancashire.gov.uk

and cc to Cumbria County Council’s Nuclear Issues: richard.griffin@cumbria.gov.uk

Dear Scientific Services/Nuclear Issues

RADIATION RELEASES TO THE ENVIRONMENT

Radioactive releases to the environment used to be independently monitored by the council run Radiation Monitoring in Lancashire, RADMIL. RADMIL was stopped a few years ago due to council cuts. The nuclear industry and government plan to manufacture fuel for new reactors beginning with uranium at Capenhurst, Near Chester and then on to Preston’s Springfields plant with proposed new nuclear build at Moorside in Cumbria  and proposed geological dumping under Cumbria. This means the escalating release of radioactive materials to the River Ribble and Clifton Marsh Landfill in Lancashire and to the Irish Sea, Lillyhall landfill and more in Cumbria.  Fracking would also release radiation to the environment.  Nuclear is ALREADY releasing an accelerating cocktail of the most potent radionuclides to the environment from fuel manufacture, routine emissions from nuclear plants, reprocessing, decommissioning and waste ‘disposal’.

Given this escalation in radioactive emissions we urge you to reinstate regular and frequent independent radiation monitoring in Lancashire and Cumbria

Yours sincerely,

Subject: RE: RADMIL

Dear Ms Birkby

The decision to discontinue radiation monitoring was taken about three years ago
by the Lancashire Chief Environmental Health Officers group. This was mainly due to budgetary pressure and the recognition that the background levels of radiation were very well established.

It was also decided that the remaining equipment would be held by Lancashire
County Scientific Services and maintained in good working order in case it might
assist in the recovery phase of an nuclear incident.

As the pressures on budgets have not eased I cannot see RADMIL being reinstated in the foreseeable future.

I hope this answers your question adequately. If you need any further information please do not hesitate to contact me.

Wastwater: The Ultimate Ice Bucket Challenge!

Wastwater- The Ultimate Ice Bucket Challenge
Wastwater- The Ultimate Ice Bucket Challenge

While the press and social media is full of the latest craze the ultimate ice bucket challenge goes on unnoticed.

This ice bucket challenge happens over 4 million times a day with gallon buckets of water being chucked over nuclear waste at Sellafield.  The water is the best, coolest and freshest there is.

It comes from Britain’s Favourite View, Wastwater.  A lake held in perpetual slavery to the nuclear industry, echoing the fate of  the people of Cumbria.  The domestic water for people in West Cumbria is increasingly being sourced by United Utilities from bore holes while Sellafield has exclusive rights to the pristine cool fresh water of Wastwater.

The current craze for Ice Bucket Challenge has done a fantastic job of raising awareness and money for Motor Neuron Disease (ALS) .  Motor Neuron is one of the host of diseases  linked to exposure to radiation.

The real ice bucket challenge must surely be to make sure that the nuclear industry contains its radioactive emissions and that no more waste is produced?

There is not enough water even in England’s largest, coolest deepest lake to cool the heels of an out of control and expanding nuclear industry.  The Ice Bucket challenge gives a short sharp shock that we soon recover from.  Meanwhile there is a tipping point from which our DNA cannot recover  with the ongoing assault from the nuclear industry.

Today’s Daily Mail – Moorside Nukiller Letter

Moorside Nukiller Daily Mail Letter Aug 25 2014
Moorside Nukiller Daily Mail Letter Aug 25 2014

The following letter was sent to all the national papers – only the Daily Mail picked it up (and edited it – original below)
Dear Editor

Despite there being no solution to the problem of what to do with
radioactive waste our leaders seem hell bent on “the biggest nuclear
development in Europe” here in Cumbria. We recently walked 5 miles around
part of the massive area being proposed. We saw and photographed roe
deer, sedge warbler and followed ancient tracks criss crossing the area.
From conversations with people we met it was clear that we are being led
up the garden path into thinking that Moorside is somehow already part of
the expanding Sellafield site. One local lass from Beckermet even asked
us to put a map into the local papers of the proposed area so people can
see the extent of the plan. A young couple on holiday in Beckermet were
appalled that there were plans for new build on such a lovely area with
the sea on one side and the Lake District mountains on the other. The
young couple also commented that if they had known Beckermet was so close
to Sellafield they wouldn’t have booked their holiday. Well guess what?
Beckermet, Braystones and Calder Bridge are about to get a whole lot
closer to nuclear build, unless we resist in every way we can. A petition
has been set up saying:

We urge David Cameron and the leaders of Europe to scrap plans for
Moorside. The UK Government is planning to sell a vast area of Cumbria to
the same companies responsible for the Fukushima disaster, so that they
can build new nuclear reactors. Please don’t risk the safety of Europe by
turning Cumbria into a nuclear sacrifice zone.

STOP MOORSIDE – Petition

Stop Moorcide
Stop Moorcide

A petition has been set up to STOP MOORSIDE, described by the industry as “the biggest nuclear development in Europe”  Despite having no solution to the problem of nuclear waste our government is hell bent on trashing a large swathe of Cumbria in order to build new nuclear reactors. To quote Michael Meacher MP: “We need new nuclear like we need a hole in the head!”

…  Please sign the petition and share widely.

STOP MOORSIDE

The petition says:

We urge David Cameron and the leaders of Europe to scrap plans for Moorside. The UK Government is planning to sell a vast area of Cumbria to the same companies responsible for the Fukushima disaster, so that they can build new nuclear reactors. Please don’t risk the safety of Europe by turning Cumbria into a nuclear sacrifice zone.

Why is this important?

Cumbria already has Sellafield. The Sellafield site has the biggest amount of radioactivity on the planet. A major accident involving the liquid high level waste tanks would have catastrophic consequences and make the area uninhabitable for many generations. The area around the Sellafield site should be an untouchable buffer zone to:
a) provide a measure of safety for surrounding towns and villages
b) to accommodate the documented leakage of radiation from the Sellafield site into groundwater.
c) to minimise the target area for terrorist attack (instead of doubling it)

Instead of honouring a beautiful wildlife diverse landscape bought by the public purse and guaranteeing a buffer zone around Sellafield the UK government are planning to sell off a vast area. The land stretches to the villages of Beckermet, Braystones and Calder Bridge. Not only this but the companies who are being wooed to buy the land are the very same companies responsible for Fukushima.

“The Moorside Project” is being promoted by NUGEN a company 60% owned by Toshiba.

Toshiba’s proposed three new reactors are AP1000s. These are the next generation of the same old uranium burning technology. The difference is that these reactors burn the uranium for longer and harder. The resulting radioactive wastes are much hotter and have to be cooled for decades longer. The NDA have told Radiation Free Lakeland that the fresh water resource for cooling is “a matter for the operators.” Currently Sellafield uses over 4 million gallons of water daily to abstracted from Wastwater, the River Ehen, the River Calder and boreholes in the area. Sellafield stopped producing electricity in 2003.

The elephant in the room is of course Toshiba’s track record in nuclear safety. Toshiba supplied the steam generator, architecture and reactor for Fukushima reactors numbers 3 and 5 Hitachi (merged with Toshiba) supplied the reactor, steam generator and architecture for Fukushima reactor no 4.

Stop Moorcide

Many thanks to everyone who came along on the walk today.  We spoke to people out walking their dogs from the lovely village of Beckermet who had no idea that the Moorcide plan involved such a vast area of green fields, wetlands, coppice and hedgerows.  One local lady astounded at the plan asked Radiation Free Lakeland to put a map of the area in the Whitehaven news so that people would realise the extent.  We have written to the press time and again with maps and images of the area being proposed for sacrifice – all ignored.  The fact that EVERYONE we spoke to in Beckermet was unaware of the plan, thinking it was to be contained in the already expanded Sellafield site speaks of a press serving the industry and government ambition rather then the interests of people buying the papers.  We hope that this will change.

We saw wildlife that would be trashed by the plan, including roe deer and sedge warbler.  Cumbria Wildlife Trust didn’t even reply to our invitation to join us on the walk to see the extent of the diabolic proposal. They are however very helpfully  ‘consulting’ on the pylons from the proposed reactors!  Taking part in the pylon consultation only serves to condone the obscenity of the new build.

What you can do:

Ask Cumbria Wildlife Trust, to Oppose Moorcide

There is more you can do – lobby the National Trust, The Lake District National Park, and anyone and everyone you can think of to join those fighting the resistance to the diabolic plan.
