SHUT HUNTERSTON B NOW – PR CRAPOLA on CRACKED NUCLEAR REACTORS DOESN’T CUT IT.

PLEASE WRITE YOUR OWN MESSAGE TO EDF and The Office for Nuclear Regulation – SHUT DOWN HUNTERSTON B .

Use this excellent letter by David Autumns below as inspiration for your letter objecting to the diabolic restart of this cracked reactor in Scotland.

Dear EDF ONR

Well played!!Congratulations on your PR Campaign surrounding the “Early Shutdown of Hunterston B” you have played an absolute blinder, in the literal sense of the word.https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2020/aug/27/hunterston-scottish-nuclear-power-station-to-shut-down-early-after-reactor-problemsThe reality being that ONR have just waved through the restart of your broken, past it’s sell by date reactor, for another 6 months of running time that will net you a colossal sum of money. The $200 million mentioned in the Guardian wasn’t spent on repairs, it’s irreparable. The £200 million has been spent on modelling just how broken Hunterston B is insideSeehttp://www.onr.org.uk/pars/2020/hunterston-b-18-031.pdfhttp://www.onr.org.uk/pars/2020/hunterson-b-20-004.pdfFilled with such gems from ONR as”It is the view of the specialist inspector however, that EDF NGL’s safety case methodology is approaching its limit of viability in NP/SC 7766 due to the assumptions and conservatism that constrain it””Consideration of fuel channel distortions following a seismic event was not included in Reference 3, and thus the recommendation has not yet been completed, however EDF NGL has provided an extract of a report in development which provides additional arguments related to this topic. The specialist fault studies inspector has not assessed these arguments in detail as they are not yet presented in a published report, but they judge that they appear to be a reasonable basis upon which to fulfil the recommendation”–This is no way to run a broken Nuclear Reactor. You know it is broken as you are going to decommission it at the end of next year … but you intend to keep it running for potentially the whole year while at the same time receiving payments from the National Grid for shutting down half of Sizewell B and running Torness at reduced power, as the demand for electricity has plummeted due to Covid19. The lights haven’t gone off while Hunterston B, Hinkley Point B and Dungeness B have all concurrently been off air.Thank you for shutting down Hunterston B “early” at the end of 2021 – it was earmarked for closure in 2011 – again your PR people are geniusesYou know it isn’t safe – you have had 44 good years out of it. I won’t write what I have written before as it is getting boring spelling out again and again what is currently wrong with Hunterston B – you know it will be running way outside of its original design specification and that it only has a secondary shutdown safety net of Nitrogen gas – whose pipes and valves are corroded after 44 years in another of your AGR’s of the same vintage.I ask you not to restart your broken reactor at 5:30pm on Sunday, for all of our sakesSincerelyDavid Autumns
