Rogue Regime – Sellafield and Co.

Save the Black Hills of Dakota and the Mountains of Cumbria

Question: What nasty rogue regime would “release radioactivity to
groundwater” near settlements?

Answer: UK government’s Environment
Agency obeying Article 35 of the Euratom Treaty.

This is not a spoof, or a send up. Our government has signed up to the
Euratom Treaty which describes in detail a plan to turn Lillyhall landfill
site into a Radioactive Waste Repository with a “controlled release of
radioactivity to groundwaters.” Our government has smoothed the way with a
change to UK law. High volumes of “low level” radioactive wastes can be
relabelled “exempt” allowing them to be dumped in landfill. The
Environment Agency has issued a permit despite the opposition of County
and Borough councils. No area is safe from becoming a nuclear waste dump
under this deregulation. On bank holiday Saturday Radiation Free Lakeland
were in Workington to tell people about the plan to release radioactivity
to groundwaters a short distance away. Over 100 people signed a letter to
Tim Farron MP in a couple of hours.

The letter says:
“ Radioactive waste, rubble and soil from smashed up nuclear plants
undergoing “decommissioning” i.e. dispersal, are being trucked hundreds of
miles to Cumbria and this is set to escalate. If this “exempt” waste is so
safe why is it being trucked hundreds of miles from Scotland and the
South? Why not just put it in Scotland’s landfill? The answer is that it

Dumping large volumes of radioactive waste in landfill should be banned as
it was prior to 2007.
There is a petition to government , do an internet search for No Nuclear
Waste in Landfill. Water is essential, dumping broken up radioactive
nuclear power plants in landfill, is not.

note: the above was sent as a letter to local and national press – unpublished –
